If you graduated from the University of New Hampshire, your degree may help lower what you pay for home and auto insurance. Through Hanover, one of the carriers we work with, UNH graduates may qualify for a 10% alumni discount on home and auto policies in New Hampshire and Maine. Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance can check whether you qualify and compare that option with what our other carriers offer.
Our Portsmouth office is a short drive from Durham. We already insure many UNH graduates across the Seacoast. Jon Merwin, our Founder and CEO, is a UNH graduate too. Here is how the discount works and how it fits the moves UNH grads often make after school.
Who may qualify
The Hanover alumni discount is for college and university graduates, and that includes UNH. A degree is what counts. You do not need to belong to an alumni association, and it does not matter whether you graduated last spring or decades ago.
- The discount is offered by Hanover, the insurance carrier. It is not a UNH program.
- It applies to Hanover home and auto policies in New Hampshire and Maine.
- Discounts may vary by carrier and eligibility.
From Durham to your first home
A lot of UNH grads stay on the Seacoast. Some rent in Portsmouth, Dover or Durham for a few years, then buy a first condo or house. Others head across the bridge to Kittery or southern Maine. Insurance needs change at each step, and so does what makes sense to buy.
Renting in Portsmouth or Durham
If you rent, a renters policy covers your belongings and your personal liability. Your landlord’s policy covers the building, not your things. Renting is also a good time to get your auto coverage in order before you buy a home.
Buying your first condo
Condo owners usually need an HO-6 policy that works alongside the condo association’s master policy. The master policy often stops at the walls, so you cover your unit’s interior, your belongings and your liability. We can help you read the association documents and choose coverage that fills the gaps.
Buying a house
When you buy a single-family home, your lender will typically require homeowners insurance. Older Seacoast homes, homes near the water and homes with updated or original systems can all be underwritten differently. Our Portsmouth homeowners insurance page covers what local buyers should know.
Bundling home and auto
When you move from renting to owning, it is a natural time to look at home and auto together. Many carriers offer a multi-policy discount when both are written with the same company, and for eligible UNH graduates, the Hanover alumni discount may also apply. Ask us how discounts combine on your policy. Whether a Hanover bundle is the right choice depends on your home, your cars and how it compares with other carriers, so we price it side by side.
It’s important to let us know what associations or alumni groups you belong to when you call.

Why compare instead of taking the first discount
We have been an independent agency since 2005 and work with 40+ carriers. A 10% alumni discount is worth asking about, but it is one input. Another carrier may offer broader coverage for your home or other discounts that matter more for your situation. We show you the options and give you an honest recommendation. We charge no agency or broker fees on personal lines.
We are licensed in 10 states, have more than 1,000 Google reviews, and are the most-reviewed independent agency in New Hampshire, with over 2,000 client testimonials. Read them on our reviews page.
If you went to another school, the same Hanover discount may apply. See our guide to alumni insurance discounts for the state-by-state details.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a member of the UNH alumni association?
No. The Hanover alumni discount is for college and university graduates, so a degree from the University of New Hampshire is what counts. You do not need to join an alumni association. Discounts may vary by carrier and eligibility.
Is Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance affiliated with UNH?
No. We are an independent insurance agency and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official insurance partner of the University of New Hampshire or its alumni association. The discount comes from Hanover, one of the insurance carriers we work with, and is open to graduates of many colleges and universities.
Does the discount apply to home and auto?
Yes. UNH graduates may qualify for a 10% discount on Hanover home and auto policies in New Hampshire and Maine. If you own a condo or are moving from renting to owning, ask us how it would apply to the policies you need.
I live in Massachusetts or Connecticut. Can I still get it?
Hanover does not currently offer an alumni group discount in Massachusetts or Connecticut. We can still compare home and auto options for you across our carriers and look for other discounts you may qualify for.
Should I just choose the carrier with the alumni discount?
Not necessarily. A discount is one part of the price. Coverage, deductibles, your home, your driving record and other discounts all matter, so we compare the Hanover alumni option against what our other carriers offer before we recommend a policy.
Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance is an independent insurance agency. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official insurance partner of the University of New Hampshire or its alumni association, and we do not offer exclusive alumni programs. The school name is used only to describe who may be eligible for a carrier discount. Discounts may vary by carrier and eligibility, are subject to underwriting and carrier rules, and can change.
