- Hingham is really two insurance markets: tidal shoreline on Hingham Bay and wooded, higher ground inland. Carriers price and underwrite them differently.
- For harbor, Crow Point and Weir River addresses, flood coverage is a separate policy. We quote NFIP through Selective and six private flood carriers.
- Antique homes around Main Street and Hingham Square need a dwelling limit built on period-correct rebuilding, not average cost per square foot.
- Portsmouth Atlantic is a family-owned independent agency, licensed in 10 states including Massachusetts, with no broker fees.
Hingham homeowners rarely have the same insurance questions. A shingle-style house facing the harbor, an 18th-century saltbox near Hingham Square, a condo by the old shipyard and a newer colonial on a wooded lot toward Wompatuck all raise different issues for an underwriter. Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance has been a family-owned independent agency since 2005, and we are licensed in Massachusetts. Instead of fitting your home into one company’s rules, we shop it across 40+ carriers and tell you which ones actually want to write your street. Where you live in Hingham changes the policy
Hingham was settled in 1635 and stretches from the shoreline of Hingham Bay south to the woods around Wompatuck State Park. That range is why two neighbors a few miles apart can get very different quotes.
- Harbor and shoreline. Homes around Hingham Harbor, Crow Point and the Otis Hill area look out on the bay. Carriers here focus on distance to salt water, elevation, roof age and wind mitigation, and some limit how many policies they write near the coast.
- World’s End and the Weir River. The Weir River estuary runs between Hingham and Hull, and World’s End, the Trustees reservation with a carriage-road landscape laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, sits at its mouth. Nearby houses often border salt marsh, so we check flood zones closely.
- Hingham Shipyard. The former shipyard on the harbor is now a mix of condos, apartments, shops and the MBTA Hingham/Hull ferry terminal. Condo owners there need an HO-6 policy that fits the association’s master policy and its deductible. If you own a Massachusetts condo, our guide to condex insurance in Massachusetts explains how the HO-6 and the master policy fit together.
- Inland and wooded. South Hingham and the neighborhoods near Wompatuck carry less surge exposure but more tree exposure from wind and ice storms, and some homes are farther from a hydrant or fire station, which carriers note.
Insuring Main Street and Hingham Square homes
Main Street is lined with houses from the 1700s and 1800s, and the Old Ship Church, built in 1681, still stands near Hingham Square. Owners of homes like these run into a specific problem: a contractor who can match hand-planed trim, wide pine floors or plaster on lath charges far more than a standard builder. If your dwelling limit came from a generic estimator, it may fall short.
What we do differently on an antique Hingham house:
- Build the replacement estimate around restoration-quality materials and labor.
- Add ordinance or law coverage, because rebuilding brings wiring, egress and energy code requirements the original house never had. Check with the Town of Hingham on whether historic district review applies to your property.
- Choose loss-of-use limits that last through a slower, specialist repair.
- Document updates to the roof, electrical, plumbing and heat, since underwriters ask about all four.
More detail is in our guide to historic home insurance.
Flood coverage around Hingham Bay
A homeowners policy will not pay for rising water, whether it comes from a nor’easter pushing the tide into the harbor or from the Weir River marsh. Flood is its own policy. Your first step is checking your address on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center. Lenders require flood insurance for federally backed mortgages in a special flood hazard area, but homes just outside the line can still take on water.
- NFIP through Selective. We write National Flood Insurance Program policies through Selective, a Write Your Own carrier. Coverage starts after a waiting period, generally 30 days for a new policy (see FloodSmart), so buy before storm season, not during it.
- Private flood. When a harbor home is worth more than the NFIP building limit, or you want coverage for things the NFIP leaves out, we compare Flow Flood, Neptune Flood, Beyond Floods, The Flood Insurance Agency, CatCoverage and Aon Edge. Whether each one will write a given address varies.
Hurricane deductibles: know the dollar figure
Shoreline policies in Massachusetts commonly carry a separate hurricane or named storm deductible. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance puts the usual range at 1% to 5% of insured value. Because it is a percentage, the more your house is insured for, the larger the check you would write after a storm. When we present options, we convert each one to dollars so you can compare a lower premium against a bigger deductible, or the reverse. If no standard carrier will take a waterfront house, the Massachusetts FAIR Plan is a last resort, and we will put it side by side with any private option.
Larger Hingham homes
For larger homes, Openly and National General write up to about $5 million, Cincinnati is our go-to over about $3 million, and Chubb, which focuses on high-value homes, joins it above $5 million. These policies are designed for custom construction and tend to offer broader replacement cost terms, fewer sublimits and options for scheduling jewelry, art or wine. Which carrier fits depends on the home and on how close it is to the water. Our coastal Massachusetts high-value home insurance page explains more.
Liability for ferry commuters, boaters and busy households
A typical Hingham household might keep a boat on a harbor mooring, have a teenager learning to drive and host summer gatherings on the deck. Each one adds liability exposure. An umbrella policy adds an extra layer of liability protection over home, auto and boat. The underlying limits on those policies need to meet the umbrella carrier’s minimums, and that is easiest to manage when one agency handles all of them.
Serving Hingham from New Hampshire
We work with Massachusetts clients by phone, email and video from our Portsmouth, NH office. We also insure homes elsewhere on the South Shore, including Cohasset, Duxbury, Scituate, Marshfield, Hull and Plymouth. For statewide information, see Massachusetts homeowners insurance.

Hingham home insurance FAQs
Is all of Hingham a flood risk?
No. Flood exposure in Hingham is very address-specific. Low-lying land around the harbor, Crow Point and the Weir River marshes is a different picture from higher ground inland toward Wompatuck. We look up your exact address on FEMA’s flood maps, then quote NFIP coverage through Selective or a private flood policy if it fits better.
My Hingham house is more than 200 years old. Will carriers still write it?
Often, yes, but underwriters will ask about the roof, wiring, plumbing and heating. Updates you have already made help, so have dates and receipts handy. We also set the dwelling limit around the cost of period-appropriate repair work and add ordinance or law coverage for code upgrades.
What should I know about a hurricane deductible before buying near Hingham Bay?
Ask for it in dollars, not just as a percentage. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance says these deductibles generally run 1% to 5% of the home’s insured value, so on a larger home the out-of-pocket amount after a named storm can be significant. Plan your savings around that number.
I commute on the Hingham/Hull ferry and keep a boat at the harbor. Can you package everything?
Yes. We can line up home, auto, boat and umbrella coverage so the liability limits match from one policy to the next, which is what an umbrella carrier usually requires.
What does a tree falling from a wooded lot have to do with my policy?
Homes on heavily wooded lots near Wompatuck State Park face wind and ice damage from trees. Homeowners policies generally cover damage when a tree hits the house, but debris removal for trees that fall without hitting anything is usually limited. We review those limits with you.
