Dover traces its settlement to 1623, making it one of the oldest communities in New Hampshire, and its housing spans nearly every era since. Brick mill buildings along the Cochecho River now hold apartments and condos, older neighborhoods near downtown are full of multi-family houses, and newer subdivisions spread out toward the Spaulding Turnpike. Each calls for a different homeowners policy.
Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance is a family-owned independent agency founded in 2005 and licensed in 10 states. We compare home coverage from 40+ carriers, charge no agency fees, and work from our Portsmouth, NH office.
Homeowners insurance across Dover
Mill conversions and downtown condos
If you own a condo in a converted mill, the association’s master policy covers part of the building and your HO-6 policy covers the rest, often interior finishes, improvements, belongings and loss assessment. Bring us the master policy or bylaws so we can match your coverage to it.
Older houses and two-families
Many homes near downtown and on the older streets date to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Carriers ask about wiring, heating and roof age. If you live in one unit of a two- or three-family and rent the others, the policy needs to cover the whole building and your liability as a landlord; tenants should carry renters insurance.
The Cochecho and Bellamy rivers
Low-lying properties near the Cochecho and Bellamy rivers and the tidal Piscataqua shoreline can flood. Homeowners policies exclude flood, so check your address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and read our Seacoast NH flood insurance guide.
Newer subdivisions
In newer neighborhoods the usual issues are finished basements, sump pumps and ice dams on complex roofs. Water backup coverage is optional and has its own limit, so we check it is on your quote. For larger homes, Openly and National General write up to about $5 million, Cincinnati is our go-to over about $3 million, and Chubb, which focuses on high-value homes, joins it above $5 million.
Nearby towns
Dover is a short drive from our Portsmouth office. We also insure homes in Portsmouth, Exeter and Rye, as well as neighboring Madbury and Newington and Rollinsford, and a personal umbrella adds liability protection.
