Key takeaways
  • Cincinnati Insurance was founded in 1950 by independent agents and still sells only through independent agents.
  • AM Best rates Cincinnati’s property casualty companies A+ (Superior), affirmed March 5, 2026, with a stable outlook.
  • Cincinnati’s Capstone home, condo and auto coverage is its top tier for high-net-worth families, with broader replacement cost and many built-in extras.
  • Portsmouth Atlantic writes Cincinnati personal lines in all 10 states where we’re licensed. Cincinnati is one of only two carriers we use for homes of $10 million and up, and its high-value auto is available when packaged with a Cincinnati home or other Cincinnati policies.
  • Coverage, forms and availability vary by state and policy, so we confirm every detail for NH and CT homes before we quote.

Is Cincinnati Insurance a good choice for a high-value home? For many high-net-worth families in New Hampshire and Connecticut, it deserves a close look. Cincinnati has sold insurance only through independent agents since 1950, AM Best rates its property casualty group A+ (Superior), and its Cincinnati Private Client program is built for larger homes, collections, collector cars and boats. Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance represents Cincinnati for personal insurance from our offices in Portsmouth, NH, and Stratford, CT. This is our independent agent’s view of what Cincinnati does well, where it fits, and what to ask before you switch.

Who is Cincinnati Insurance?

The Cincinnati Insurance Companies were founded in 1950 by four small business owners who also ran their own independent insurance agencies, according to Cincinnati’s history page. That agent-first idea still shapes the company. Cincinnati sells its insurance exclusively through independent insurance agents (Cincinnati, About Us).

The Cincinnati Insurance Company leads the group, alongside The Cincinnati Casualty Company and The Cincinnati Indemnity Company. The parent company, Cincinnati Financial Corporation, trades on Nasdaq as CINF, and the insurance companies are domiciled in Fairfield, Ohio (AM Best).

Portsmouth Atlantic places personal lines only with Cincinnati. This review covers Cincinnati’s home, condo, auto, valuables, watercraft and umbrella coverage for individuals and families.

What is Cincinnati’s AM Best rating?

AM Best rates The Cincinnati Insurance Company and its property casualty subsidiaries A+ (Superior) for financial strength, with long-term issuer credit ratings of aa (Superior). AM Best affirmed those ratings on March 5, 2026, with a stable outlook (AM Best press release). AM Best’s rating disclosure for The Cincinnati Insurance Company shows its first rating dates to June 30, 1955 (AM Best).

In that release, AM Best assessed Cincinnati’s balance sheet strength as strongest and noted favorable reserve development for over 30 consecutive years. Cincinnati’s own financial strength page also lists ratings from S&P Global, Fitch and Moody’s. For a homeowner, the takeaway is simple: Cincinnati has the financial footing to pay large claims on large homes.

Where does Cincinnati write personal insurance?

Cincinnati’s products and licensing page lists home and auto insurance as available in both New Hampshire and Connecticut. You can’t buy a Cincinnati policy online or directly from the company. You get it through an independent agency like ours, which also means you have a local person to call when something goes wrong.

New Hampshire

On the Seacoast, homeowners in Portsmouth, Rye and New Castle can reach Cincinnati through our Portsmouth office. See our guide to high-value home insurance in Portsmouth, NH.

Connecticut

Along the Long Island Sound shoreline, our Stratford office works with families in Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan. See our guide to high-value home insurance in Stratford, CT.

What Portsmouth Atlantic writes with Cincinnati

Portsmouth Atlantic can write with Cincinnati in every state where we’re licensed, all 10 of them, including New Hampshire and Connecticut. We place personal lines only with Cincinnati, and that covers almost every personal coverage a household needs:

  • Homeowners, including high-value and high-net-worth homes
  • Auto (packaged with a Cincinnati home or other Cincinnati policies)
  • Personal umbrella
  • Jewelry and valuables riders
  • Dwelling fire coverage for homes you own but don’t live in
  • Condo
  • Log homes
  • And more, such as watercraft and collections

Every policy is still subject to Cincinnati’s underwriting, and specific forms and options vary by state and policy.

What is Cincinnati Private Client?

Cincinnati Private Client is Cincinnati’s program for people with specialized insurance needs. Cincinnati says it can tailor a program to cover a home and its distinctive features, valuables and collections, autos and watercraft. That one-carrier approach is a big part of the appeal for families who would rather not juggle several policies and renewal dates.

From Executive Classic to Executive Capstone

Cincinnati announced dedicated high net worth underwriting and inspection teams in December 2014 (Cincinnati Financial, 2014). In 2015, it launched Executive Capstone as a new suite of high net worth products, planned to replace its older Executive Classic product as it rolled out (Cincinnati Financial, 2015). By 2017, Capstone had reached Massachusetts (Cincinnati Financial, 2017). Which form applies to your home depends on your state, so we confirm it with Cincinnati when we quote.

What stands out in Cincinnati’s Capstone home and condo coverage?

We reviewed Cincinnati’s coverage materials for its Capstone home and condo forms. Here is what we point out to clients, in our own words. Exact terms, limits and availability vary by state and policy, so your quote and policy are what count.

  • Stronger rebuilding protection. Capstone pays to rebuild or repair your home on a replacement cost basis, with an option for extra replacement cost above the dwelling limit if rebuilding costs jump after a big loss.
  • Building code upgrades. Capstone is designed to pay the real cost of bringing a damaged home up to current building codes, which matters for older Seacoast and shoreline homes.
  • Your belongings at replacement cost. Contents are covered for what it costs to replace them today, not a depreciated value, up to your policy limits.
  • Living expenses based on your real loss. If a covered loss forces you out, additional living expense is tied to the actual loss you sustain rather than a short fixed window, subject to policy terms.
  • Water backup built in. Sewer, drain and sump pump backup is included on Capstone rather than sold as a separate add-on, subject to policy limitations.
  • Extras that fit a high-net-worth household. Capstone includes items many standard forms leave out, such as coverage when jewelry or silver is simply misplaced, help with green rebuilding upgrades, pet damage, emergency travel cancellation, identity theft help, kidnap and ransom expense and preventive steps to protect the home before a covered loss.
  • A broader definition of where you live. Capstone treats a home you own as well as one you live in as your residence premises, and gives you longer coverage for belongings after a move.

Condo and co-op owners

Cincinnati also writes condo unit owner coverage, with a Capstone version for higher-value units. A condo policy protects your belongings, your liability and the parts of the unit you are responsible for under your association documents, such as upgraded kitchens, built-ins and flooring. It can also pay your share of an association loss assessment. Before we quote a condo, we ask for the association’s master policy and bylaws, because those documents decide how much unit coverage you really need.

Service line coverage for older pipes and New England winters

Cincinnati offers an optional service line endorsement on its higher-tier homeowner policies. It can help pay to repair or replace a failed underground utility line that you own, such as the water, sewer, power or heating line running to your house. Covered causes include freezing and frost heave, root invasion, rupture, wear and tear, and rust or corrosion. It also helps with excavation, damaged landscaping and living costs if you can’t stay in the home during repairs. For older New Hampshire homes with long service runs, and for established Connecticut neighborhoods with aging lines, we think it is worth asking about. Availability varies by state and policy.

How does Cincinnati handle high-value auto?

Cincinnati auto is available when it is packaged with a Cincinnati home or other Cincinnati policies, not as a standalone policy. For standalone high-value auto, we look to Hagerty, Hanover and Progressive. Cincinnati’s Capstone auto coverage is built for families with newer, higher-value or specialty vehicles. Based on Cincinnati’s comparison materials, here is what stands out to us. Features and availability vary by state and policy.

  • Agreed value option. You and Cincinnati can agree on your car’s value up front, so a total loss pays that amount rather than a depreciated market value.
  • New car replacement. For qualifying newer vehicles, a stolen or totaled car can be replaced with a comparable new model.
  • Original manufacturer parts. Repairs use OEM parts, which matters for vehicles with advanced safety systems.
  • Broader liability territory. Liability coverage can extend worldwide when certain requirements are met, with exceptions for places under U.S. travel or economic bans.
  • More generous expense coverages. Capstone broadens rental car, lock and key replacement, roadside help and trip interruption coverage compared with Cincinnati’s standard auto forms.

Cincinnati’s auto page also notes that all personally owned vehicles, including collector cars, motorcycles and motorhomes, can go on one policy with one bill and one renewal date. See our Portsmouth car insurance and Stratford car insurance pages.

Boat and yachtWatercraft from small boats to large yachts, with agreed value on a total loss for eligible boats, subject to policy conditions

For coastal and second homes, we also look at Cincinnati’s water damage tools. Cincinnati works with vendors to offer policyholders water shut-off devices, which matter in a house that sits empty for part of the winter.

Is your dwelling coverage keeping up?

Whatever carrier you choose, the biggest risk we see on high-value homes is a dwelling limit that has not kept pace with rebuilding costs. Custom millwork, slate and copper roofs, and specialty trades cost more every year, and a home that was insured correctly five years ago may be short today. Our guide to insurance on a $2 million home walks through how we think about it.

Expert tip
“Rising inflation has pushed dwelling replacement costs higher, and the goalposts have shifted. The dwelling coverage a high-value home needs today is much higher than it was a few years ago. The good news is that carriers are expanding their appetite for higher-value homes, so there are more strong options than there used to be.”— Jon Merwin, Founder & CEO, Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance

How do Cincinnati claims work?

Cincinnati asks you to report a claim by phone, day or night, or through your independent agent (Cincinnati, Claims Service). A claims representative then investigates, evaluates coverage and damage, and pays what is owed under the policy. Personal lines policyholders can also use the MyCincinnati app to view policy information, make payments and report claims. We help our clients report claims and follow up.

Why we place high-value clients with Cincinnati

We’ve been an independent agency since 2005. We’re licensed in 10 states and work with 30+ carriers, so we start with your home and your family, not one company’s form. For high-net-worth clients in New Hampshire and Connecticut, Cincinnati is a strong option to price and compare. We like that one Private Client program can bring a primary home, a collector car, a boat and a jewelry schedule under one carrier, with an umbrella on top. We place personal lines only with Cincinnati, and we review the forms side by side with our other high-value carriers before we recommend one.

Where Cincinnati fits among our high-value carriers

For homes up to $5 million, we compare Cincinnati with Chubb, Openly and National General. For homes of $10 million and up, Cincinnati and Chubb are the two carriers we use. For standalone high-value auto, we look to Hagerty, Hanover and Progressive. Cincinnati auto is available when it is packaged with a Cincinnati home or other Cincinnati policies, and Chubb auto is an option when it is packaged with a Chubb home policy.
