Massachusetts runs its own auto insurance system: compulsory coverage, a no-fault Personal Injury Protection benefit, and a standard set of four required parts on every policy. Minimum limits rose on July 1, 2025, so older policies and older articles may show outdated figures. Here’s what the law requires now and how we help Bay State drivers compare auto insurance options.
Massachusetts auto insurance: key facts
- Insurance is required to register a car in Massachusetts (Mass.gov, Division of Insurance).
- Four compulsory coverages: Bodily Injury to Others, Personal Injury Protection, Bodily Injury Caused by Uninsured Auto, and Damage to Someone Else’s Property.
- Since July 1, 2025: bodily injury $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident; property damage $30,000; uninsured auto $25,000/$50,000 (Acts of 2024, Ch. 275).
- PIP stays at $8,000 per person and covers medical bills, up to 75% of lost wages and replacement services regardless of fault.
- The compulsory Bodily Injury to Others coverage applies only to accidents in Massachusetts, so optional bodily injury limits matter when you drive out of state.
Required by Law
The Four Compulsory Parts of a Massachusetts Policy
Bodily Injury to Others
At least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. The compulsory part covers accidents in Massachusetts only and doesn’t cover passengers in your own car.
Personal Injury Protection
$8,000 per person for medical expenses, up to 75% of lost wages and replacement services. It pays for you, household members, passengers and pedestrians no matter who caused the crash.
Uninsured Auto
At least $25,000/$50,000 for injuries caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver, covering you, household members and passengers.
Property Damage
At least $30,000 for damage you cause to someone else’s property, up from $5,000 before July 1, 2025.
Massachusetts law changed in December 2024 when the Legislature passed Chapter 275 of the Acts of 2024. The new minimums apply to policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025. If your policy renewed before that date, check your declarations page at your next renewal.

No-Fault Basics
How No-Fault PIP Works in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is a no-fault state. After most crashes, your own PIP coverage pays the first $8,000 of covered medical bills, lost wages and replacement services, whoever was at fault. PIP also protects pedestrians hit by your car. Because $8,000 doesn’t go far after a hospital stay, many drivers add optional coverages such as medical payments and higher bodily injury limits.
Beyond the Minimum
Optional Coverages Most Massachusetts Drivers Consider
The Division of Insurance notes that accidents often cause damage beyond the required minimums. Common additions include optional bodily injury to others (which also covers out-of-state accidents and passengers), underinsured motorist coverage, collision, comprehensive, medical payments, towing and substitute transportation. With property damage now starting at $30,000, it’s still worth asking whether that’s enough if you hit a newer SUV or a multi-car pileup on I-93 or the Mass Pike.
Local Context
Driving in Massachusetts
From Route 128 and I-495 rush hours to narrow Boston streets, Cape Cod summer traffic and Berkshire winters, Massachusetts packs a lot of driving variety into a small state. Dense traffic raises the chance of fender-benders, while western hill towns see heavy snow and deer. Many New Hampshire residents commute into Massachusetts too; if that’s you, see our New Hampshire auto insurance page.
