Massachusetts RMV & Insurance FAQs

Do I need to tell PAI when I cancel my Massachusetts registration?

Yes. Let us know right away and send us the Registration Cancellation receipt. Your insurance and your registration are linked in RMV records, so we need that receipt before we can cancel the policy on that vehicle.

Why do you need the cancellation (plate return) receipt?

Mass.gov advises keeping the Registration Cancellation receipt and providing a copy to your insurance company. It shows the registration was cancelled first. Email it to insure@portsmouthatlanticins.com.

What should I do before cancelling insurance on a Massachusetts vehicle?

Cancel the registration with the RMV first, download the cancellation receipt, then send it to us. If the policy ends while the registration is still active, the RMV can revoke the registration, and a reinstatement fee may apply before you can register a vehicle in Massachusetts again.

Do I have to bring my plates back to the RMV?

No. According to Mass.gov, plates don’t have to be returned when a registration is cancelled. Once it’s cancelled, recycle or destroy the plates. Cutting them in half and throwing them away is acceptable, and some towns take them at the recycling center.

What is the difference between my registration and my insurance?

Your registration (plates) is issued by the RMV and lets the vehicle be driven on public roads. Your auto policy is the coverage on that vehicle. Massachusetts requires an active policy to renew a registration, and you can’t drive the vehicle on a public way once the registration is cancelled.

I’m moving to or from Massachusetts. What should I do?

Mass.gov says you must update your address with the RMV within 30 days of a move and tell your insurance agent. If you’re leaving the state, cancel your MA registration once the vehicle is registered in your new state, then send us the receipt. You may also qualify for an excise abatement, so check with your local assessor. Call us and we’ll help coordinate coverage in New Hampshire, Maine, or your new state.
