Most Wilton houses sit on large, wooded lots away from town water and sewer, which changes the homeowners insurance conversation. Before price, we want to know about the well, the septic system, the trees near the roof, and how the house rode out the last long power outage. Those details decide which claims a policy will actually pay.

Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance is a family-owned independent agency founded in 2005 and licensed in 10 states. We serve Wilton homeowners. Asking us for a quote doesn’t obligate you to buy anything.

What shapes a Wilton homeowners policy

Wells, septic and the systems you cannot see

A standard homeowners form generally does not treat a worn-out well pump or a failed septic field as sudden damage. Some carriers offer equipment breakdown or service line endorsements that can fill part of that gap. We check whether those options are available on your quote and explain what they would and would not cover.

Big trees and long outages

Wilton lost power for days at a time after the October 2011 nor’easter and again after Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020. Wind-driven tree damage to a house is usually covered, but food spoilage, a frozen-pipe loss in an empty house, and removal of a tree that falls without hitting anything have tighter limits. A standby generator and a low-temperature alarm are worth mentioning when we quote.

Along the Norwalk River

The Norwalk River and Route 7 run north to south through town, and homes on low ground near the river and its brooks can take on water in heavy rain. Homeowners policies exclude flood. Check your address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, then ask us about a separate flood policy.

Antique homes, barns and outbuildings

Wilton still has many eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses, plus barns, studios and detached garages. Other-structures coverage is usually a percentage of the dwelling limit, so a large barn can need a higher limit. Rebuilding period details such as plaster walls and wide-board floors also costs more, which is why we revisit the dwelling limit rather than copying the purchase price.

Carriers we use for Connecticut homes

We compare homeowners coverage from 40+ carriers, looking at the forms, deductibles and endorsements each offers for your house. For larger homes, Openly and National General write up to about $5 million. Cincinnati and Chubb both write homes at any dwelling limit, so we quote both. If your home needs higher limits, see our Connecticut high-value home insurance page, and consider a personal umbrella for added liability protection. See our Wilton high-value home insurance page.

We also insure homes in neighboring Ridgefield, New Canaan, Weston and Norwalk. For statewide notes, read our Connecticut homeowners insurance guide. Renting in town? See our Wilton renters insurance page.

Frequently asked questions

Does homeowners insurance cover my well pump in Wilton?

Usually not when the pump simply wears out. Some carriers offer equipment breakdown or service line endorsements that can help. We check what is available on your quote.

Do I need flood insurance in Wilton?

If your home is near the Norwalk River or one of its brooks, consider it. Homeowners policies exclude flood, and a lender will require flood coverage if the house is in a FEMA special flood hazard area and you have a federally backed mortgage.

Is my barn or detached studio covered?

Detached buildings fall under other-structures coverage, which is usually a percentage of your dwelling limit. A large barn or finished studio may need a higher limit, so tell us about every building on the lot.

Which carriers do you use for Wilton homeowners insurance?

Does requesting a quote obligate me to buy?

No. Requesting a quote doesn’t obligate you to buy anything, whether it’s for home, auto, flood or umbrella coverage.
