Key takeaways
- Limited-production McLarens kept as collectibles may fit a collector policy with agreed value.
- Every modern McLaren is built around a carbon-fiber tub. Repairs belong at an approved specialist.
- MSO options and bespoke specifications raise replacement cost. Document them.
- A McLaren you drive regularly usually fits a high-value auto policy.
- Track days and timed events are commonly excluded, and many McLaren owners drive on track.
McLaren is the newest of the major supercar makers, and that shapes how its cars are insured. Most McLarens on New England roads were built after 2011, and many are driven far more than their owners expected. A smaller group, the F1, P1, Senna, Speedtail, Elva and the LT cars, are bought partly as collectibles and kept with low mileage. The right policy depends on which group your car is in and how you actually use it.
This guide covers what’s specific to insuring a McLaren. For how collector insurance works in general, start with our classic and collector car insurance guide. We shop collector car coverage with carriers including Hagerty, J.C. Taylor, Liberty Mutual, Cincinnati and American Modern, and we’ll confirm eligibility for your vehicle before you rely on a policy.

Which McLarens are treated as collectible?
The McLaren F1 (1990s)
The F1, launched in 1992, is one of the most valuable modern cars in the world. It was built around a carbon-fiber monocoque, and McLaren still supports owners through its Heritage team. An F1 is insured as a top-tier collectible, with a documented agreed value, factory support records, enclosed transport and secure storage.
Ultimate Series and LT cars
The P1, Senna, Speedtail, Elva and other limited Ultimate Series cars, along with the Longtail models such as the 675LT, 600LT and 765LT, are built in limited numbers and often kept as collectibles. Some owners drive them sparingly and store them carefully, and those cars may fit a collector policy. Others take them to the track or drive them often, which points to a different policy and a conversation about track exclusions.
Series production cars: 12C to 750S and Artura
The 12C, 650S, 570S, 720S, 750S, GT, GTS and Artura are modern supercars that many owners drive regularly. They usually belong on a high-value auto policy built for a car that depreciates, gets driven and needs a specialist shop when it’s damaged. See exotic and high-value collector car insurance for how we decide between the two.
The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
Built in the 2000s as a joint project, the SLR is serviced through McLaren’s Heritage program and has a following among both Mercedes and McLaren collectors. It’s typically treated as a collectible. If you also collect older Mercedes, see our classic Mercedes-Benz insurance guide.
The carbon tub, repairs and approved body shops
Every modern McLaren is built around a carbon-fiber passenger cell, called the MonoCell on cars such as the 12C and 650S and the MonoCage on the P1, with aluminum subframes at the front and rear. The structure is strong, but assessing and repairing it after an accident takes training, equipment and factory procedures. McLaren appoints body shops whose technicians are trained in this structural work and in the paint systems McLaren uses.
Before you ever need a repair, ask how your policy handles:
- Your choice of a McLaren-approved body shop
- Factory parts, including carbon body panels, carbon-ceramic brakes and glass for dihedral doors
- The time a repair can take while parts come from the factory
- Transport to a specialist that may be outside your state
- Whether a repaired car can lose value, and how the policy treats that
MSO, specifications and value
McLaren Special Operations, created in 2011, personalizes cars with bespoke paint, carbon bodywork, interior trims and wheels, and its Heritage team supports the F1, SLR and other older cars. Options and MSO work can add a lot to what it costs to put a car back as it was, so keep the build specification, MSO documents and invoices with the car’s records and tell us about them when we set the value.
Prices for Senna, P1 and LT cars have swung both ways since launch, so a value fixed on the day you bought the car may be wrong a year later. Bring recent comparable sales to each renewal, and see our agreed value explainer for how insurers document the number.
Track days and driving events
McLarens are built for the track, and many owners use them there, at factory events, club days or circuits in the region. That’s exactly where most policies stop. Collector and standard auto policies commonly exclude track days, high-performance driving events, timed events and instruction days. If track driving is part of how you use the car, tell us before you register so you know where coverage ends and can decide how to handle the gap.
Driving to a show, a club tour or a concours lawn is ordinary hobby use. The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance in Connecticut marked its 30th year on May 29 to 31, 2026, including a Saturday Concours de Sport. If you trailer your car to events, see car shows and trailering.
Storage, transport and New England weather
A McLaren left on a trickle charger in a dry, locked garage over the winter, and kept away from brine-treated roads, comes out in spring the way it went in. Low front ends mean many owners use the nose-lift system on every driveway and ramp, and transport usually means an enclosed trailer with low-angle ramps or a specialist carrier. Factory tracking subscriptions and monitored garage alarms are worth mentioning when we quote. For the off-season, read our storage guide; for coastal garages, the storm checklist; and in April, the recommissioning list.
Collections and the rest of your insurance
Plenty of McLaren owners keep a second performance car and a weekend house. Liability is where gaps show up, so we match the auto limits on every car to the umbrella that sits over them and the homes where they’re garaged. If you also own a Ferrari, a Porsche or a Lamborghini, our marque guides cover what’s specific to those cars, and our guide to classic car collection insurance covers several cars on one policy. For larger collections or several properties, see high net worth insurance.
If you have a claim
Get the car photographed where it sits and arrange enclosed transport to a McLaren-approved shop rather than the nearest general collision center. Give the adjuster the build spec and MSO invoices early, because they determine which panels and finishes are replaced. Collector cars with agreed value settle a total loss at that value less the deductible; cars on a high-value auto policy settle on the terms of that policy.
McLaren quote checklist
- Model, year, VIN and delivery date
- The build specification, MSO documents and option invoices
- Your estimate of value, with photos, service records and any appraisal
- Any aftermarket wheels, exhausts, tuning or wraps
- Where the car is stored, how it is secured and whether it has an alarm or tracker
- How often you drive it, and whether it goes to shows, tours or track events
- Declarations for your other vehicles, homes and umbrella
Why work with an independent agency
The choice between a collector program and a high-value auto policy, and the honest conversation about track use, is easier with an agency that represents several insurers. We’ll lay the options next to each other and tie them to your other cars, home and umbrella.
Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance is a family-owned independent agency founded in 2005. Our 15 employees work from our Portsmouth, NH office and a Connecticut office, we are licensed in 10 states, and we work with 40+ carriers. We are New Hampshire’s highest-rated agency on Google, with 1,000+ Google reviews and over 2,000 testimonials, and we don’t charge any fees.
We work with McLaren owners in every New England state where we’re licensed, from the NH Seacoast to the Connecticut shoreline. For state plate and registration rules, see the New Hampshire, Connecticut and Maine pages.

Frequently asked questions
Can a McLaren go on a collector car policy?
Some can. Limited-production cars such as the F1, P1, Senna, Speedtail, Elva and the LT models, kept with low annual mileage, secure storage and a separate everyday car, may fit a collector policy with agreed value. A 720S, 750S, GT or Artura you drive regularly usually belongs on a high-value auto policy. We’ll confirm eligibility for your vehicle.
What happens if the carbon-fiber tub is damaged?
It needs a specialist. Every modern McLaren is built around a carbon-fiber tub, called the MonoCell or MonoCage, with aluminum subframes front and rear. McLaren-approved body shops are trained to assess and repair these structures. Ask before a loss whether you can choose one, and how the policy handles factory parts and repair time.
Are track days covered for a McLaren?
Usually not. Track days, high-performance driving events and timed events are commonly excluded from collector and standard auto policies, and many McLaren owners do drive on track. If you plan to, talk to us first so you know where your policy stops before you register for an event.
How is an agreed value set for a limited-production McLaren?
With documentation and market evidence. Share the build specification, MSO options, service records, photos and recent sales of comparable cars. Values for limited cars can move quickly in either direction, so review the agreed value at every renewal rather than leaving it at the purchase price.
Does McLaren Special Operations work affect insurance?
It can raise the value, so tell us about it. MSO personalization, such as bespoke paint, carbon bodywork or interior trims, adds cost to replace after a loss. Keep the MSO documentation with the car’s records and include it when we set the value, so a repair or settlement reflects the car you actually own.
