Avon sits in the Farmington Valley, with the Farmington River running through town and Talcott Mountain rising along the east side. Homeowners here deal with inland Connecticut weather: heavy snow and ice, big trees over the roof, and river and brook flooding rather than storm surge. Those risks shape what a good Avon homeowners policy looks like.

Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance is a family-owned independent agency founded in 2005 and licensed in 10 states. We compare home coverage from 40+ carriers and serve Avon homeowners.

What shapes homeowners insurance in Avon

The October 2011 snowstorm and tree damage

The Halloween-weekend nor’easter of 2011 dropped heavy, wet snow on trees still in leaf, and the Farmington Valley was among the hardest-hit parts of the state, with many homes out of power for more than a week. Wind and tree damage to a house is generally covered; spoiled food, frozen pipes in a cold house and debris removal carry tighter limits. A generator and a low-temperature alarm are worth noting when we quote.

The Farmington River and its brooks

Homes on low ground near the Farmington River and the brooks that feed it can flood in heavy rain or spring melt. Flood is excluded from homeowners policies, so check your address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and ask us about flood insurance.

Hillside homes and finished basements

Houses along the slopes of Talcott Mountain and in Avon’s newer subdivisions often have finished lower levels. Water backup from a failed sump pump or drain is a separate, optional coverage, and we check the limit fits what is downstairs.

Larger homes

Avon has many larger houses on wooded lots. For larger homes, Openly and National General write up to about $5 million. Cincinnati and Chubb both write homes at any dwelling limit, so we quote both. See our Connecticut high-value home insurance page and consider a personal umbrella.

Frequently asked questions

Is tree damage covered on an Avon homeowners policy?

Damage when a tree falls on your house is generally covered. Removing a tree that falls without hitting a covered structure usually has tight limits or none.

Do I need flood insurance near the Farmington River?

Consider it if your home is on low ground near the river or a brook. Homeowners policies exclude flood.

Should I add water backup coverage?

If you have a finished basement, yes. Water backup from a sump pump or drain is a separate coverage with its own limit.

Which carriers do you use for Avon homes?

We compare coverage from 40+ carriers. For larger homes, Openly and National General write up to about $5 million. Cincinnati and Chubb both write homes at any dwelling limit, so we quote both.

Does requesting a quote obligate me to buy?

No. Requesting a quote doesn’t obligate you to buy anything, whether it’s for home, auto, flood or umbrella coverage.
